Spanish Class at St Juliana Catholic School

In primary grades, students have the opportunity to develop vocabulary and basic grammar skills based on contexts related to daily living. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand and speak about many topics including daily routines, greetings and farewells, descriptions, food, clothes , autobiographical information, numbers, colors, dates, time and weather. Students will read short stories appropriate to their grade and language level. They will become more aware and gain knowledge of the culturally diverse Spanish speaking world to develop insight into the nature of language and culture.

In grades K and 3rd, students will have an introduction to Spanish. The class will consist of songs, games, stories and worksheets. Students will not have homework.

In grades 4th and 8th, students will use Google Classroom for material and assignments. 4th grade will occasionally have homework.

In grades 5th and 8th, students will learn more grammar, including articles, pronouns, conjugations, adjectives, adverbs, etc. Students will also learn about culture and they will be assigned several assignments to complete on their own. Students will have weekly homework assignments. Students will also have regular tests and term projects.

Class Supply List

Students need these items in class EVERY DAY:

• ˜iPad/computer (charged) upper grades

• Spanish book if applicable

• Notebook

• Two pencils

• Two highlighters (different colors)

• Two ballpoint or felt tip pens

Grading:

• Grading Scale

  • A (90-100) = Excellent; high above average/grade level

  • B (80-89) = Very good; above-average/grade level

  • C (70-79) = good; average/at grade level

  • D (60-69) = poor; below average/grade level

  • F (59-below) = failing; far below grade level

  • Grades for lower grades will be O or plus for outstanding, S or check for satisfactory, and N or minus for improvement needed.

Homework Policy

• ˜ All assignments must be fully completed and with a legible presentation by the due date to receive credit.

• ˜ All homework, classwork, and tests are on Google Classroom (directions/expectations/due dates for assignments, projects, etc., are always addressed in class beforehand)

Absent or Missing Work

• ˜Check Google Classroom before contacting the teacher for missing work.

• It is the student's responsibility to copy down and obtain any missed assignments and reschedule any tests.

• Students will make up tests when the student is back in class.

• There will be no homework pass for Spanish.

Late Work

• Classwork, homework, quizzes, or tests missed must be submitted or completed upon returning to the classroom and may receive a maximum credit of 80%, up to one week late.

How Work Is Submitted

• Because we are using Google classroom, students will turn in assignments electronically on the site. Classroom conveniently shows when a child has turned in on time, if they have submitted it late, or if it is simply incomplete.

ATTENDANCE

• Regular attendance is essential. Students must make arrangements for make-up work on the day of return. It is the student's responsibility to contact the teacher and arrange for make-up work.

ELECTRONICS

• Cell phones and other electronic devices for music and games are not allowed during class time. Use of these devices or anything unrelated to Spanish class without expressed permission from the teacher will result in confiscation, detention, or referral.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR

• Students will be responsible and respectful at all times in the classroom. Defiance, bullying, and other disruptive or harassing behavior will not be tolerated. Spanish class is only for Spanish learning. Parents and administration will be notified if there is any inappropriate behavior during Spanish class.

ACADEMIC HONESTY

Students will demonstrate honesty and integrity. Students will do their own work in test-taking, homework, class assignments. Sharing work with another student is considered cheating.
